The Sales Gym Methodology™
Practical disciplines for real-world selling
A practical approach to developing the human skills, judgement and behaviours effective selling requires. It is not a linear sales process: it strengthens the person using the tools, processes and systems already in place.
Sales Fitness
Where could I become more Sales Fit?
Sales Fitness means being able to use the skills, judgement and behaviours a situation requires, when it requires them. It is not a permanent state or one ideal salesperson profile.
The methodology develops sales capability through two connected disciplines: improving how salespeople sell, and improving how sales managers coach. Salespeople deliberately practise how they sell. Sales managers deliberately practise how they coach.

Nine workouts
Nine practical disciplines that strengthen how you sell
- 01
Stay Curious
Explore before assuming you have understood.
- 02
Understand Their World
Understand what's happening, what matters and what could influence change.
- 03
Widen the Lens
Understand who else matters and what matters to them.
- 04
Earn Trust
Pay attention to behaviours that build or reduce customer confidence.
- 05
Explore Value
Understand what meaningful change could be worth to the customer.
- 06
Open Up New Thinking
Help customers explore possibilities or perspectives they may not have considered.
- 07
See It Clearly
Separate what you know from what you think, assume or hope.
- 08
Create Customer-Led Momentum
Focus on what is changing for the customer, not just what you are doing.
- 09
Earn Meaningful Commitment
Help the customer turn thinking and intention into meaningful action.
The nine workouts are complementary disciplines to select and combine as each situation requires. They are not sequential stages, a sales funnel or a replacement for your sales process. The numbering is for reference only.
The Sales Fitness Cycle
How salespeople turn real selling experience into deliberate practice
- 1
Prepare
What are you trying to accomplish? What will you practise?
- 2
Perform
Be present. Listen. Notice. Adapt.
- 3
Reflect
What actually happened? What did you notice?
- 4
Train
Choose one specific behaviour to strengthen.
- 5
Repeat
Take it into another real sales situation.
- Experience gives you opportunities to improve. Deliberate practice helps you use them.
Sales Gym Micro Actions
Keep your training small
- 1
Specific
You know exactly what you will do.
- 2
Behavioural
It describes something you will do differently.
- 3
Observable
You can tell whether you did it.
- 4
Practicable
You have a real opportunity to try it.
- 5
Repeatable
You can practise it more than once.
Small enough to try. Clear enough to notice. Useful enough to repeat.
Manager coaching
Prepare → Coach → Reflect
- Step 1
Prepare
Clarify the coaching purpose, the evidence, the context and the thinking you want to help develop.
- Step 2
Coach
Use curiosity and constructive challenge. Coach rather than rescue, and help the salesperson make their own sense of the situation.
- Step 3
Reflect
Examine the conversation and the next observable action. Notice what changed, reinforce it, and decide what you will do differently next time.
